What would you do if your dad dropped the bombshell that he wanted to be a woman? There are an estimated 6,000 transsexuals in the UK. Many are married and have children. This documentary gains intimate access to the lives of two families, in which the father transitions to become the woman he’s always wanted to be, including speech therapy to feminise his voice and the irreversible surgery that will change his sex forever. It follows the impact on partners and children, like 17-year-old Natasha: ‘It’s the last thing you ever expect your dad to do. I cried for a long time and just wanted to blank it out. But I still love him. Always have and always will. It’s just that I’ve got a dad who’s a woman, and there is a woman who is my dad.’

”You think, I’ll take a few hormones, go into an operating theatre: job done. You don’t have the first idea,” says Jane, who was John until he told his wife, daughter, and son that he wanted – needed really – to live as a woman.’

Radio Times

“This revealing film tells the stories of Michelle and Jane, who have gender dysphoria, a condition affecting men and women who feel their true gender is at odds with their physical body.’

TV Times

“A moving one-off documentary.”

Closer

“This study of two transsexual fathers as they complete their transition from male to female certainly sounds lurid. Ultimately, however, partners are stoic and supportive, teenage children roll their eyes but are tolerant, the older generation of parents say they just want their sons to be happy. It’s a study in making the most of a difficult situation and, despite some unanswered questions, doing it extremely well.”
